If you recall, Oakley Canada recently hosted a contest to find their next Oakley Ambassadors for 2013.  Women from across Canada submitted videos and written stories on why their positive and active outlook on life, would be a great fit with the Oakley Canada brand.

Cassie Hawrysh – Cassie aspires to help people, young and old, to realize that their limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.  She is excited to inspire others to realize that anyone really can achieve anything!

Magee Walker – Living in the Whistler community, Magee is excited to show (not just tell) people about the innovations, events and products that will improve the way they perform the activities that they love.

Kristine Wiess – Living with an “activity first” mantra, Kristine’s list of active activities include strength training sessions, mountain bike rides, snowshoe trips or snowboarding.

From watching and reading the motivating stories of these strong-willed Canadian women, these ambassadors definitely have an impact on their networks and communities. Through the Oakley Ambassador program, I hope their enthusiasm continues to shine as they continue to inspire others throughout the rest of the year and beyond.

Pollen restaurant is located inside the Flower Dome.

I thought it was a curious name until I Googled the place and learned that it was located in the Flower Dome in the new Gardens by the Bay. The gardens, which span 250 acres of reclaimed land and reportedly cost SGD $1 billion, are a rare gem in a city whose bland skyline has a certain Ottawa-government vibe to it. (The notable exception being the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and its jaw-dropping infinity pool on the 57th floor.) For Pollen’s chef director, “Michelin” man Jason Atherton, the name is a metaphor for the growth of new ideas or “the birth of newly invented recipes and ways of cooking.” Atherton—who is a former protege of Gordon Ramsay— has a similar venture in London, called Pollen Street Social.

Foodie hype or divine dinner: Did the restaurant deliver? Read on…

My meal started with champagne—mais, oui!—and some charming amuse-bouches (arancini served with apple purée and mustard sauce). For a starter, I chose the slow-cooked “English Breakfast” egg, which is also offered at Atherton’s London resto. The egg, which is slow-poached for one hour and 12 minutes at 60ºC, is served on a bed of tomato purée and topped with crispy bacon, croutons and morels. #chiccomfortfood was my Twitter hashtag review on this delish number.

For my main, I chose the one fish I simply can’t resist: halibut. It was served with saffron potatoes, smoked eel and leeks and topped with sea-urchin cream. It was a subtly exquisite blending of unexpected flavours and—sadly—a meal that I’ll never be able to reproduce in my own kitchen. For dessert, I opted for the Banana Rice Pudding because those three words—almost as much as “mac and cheese”—are the culinary equivalent to wrapping yourself in a cashmere blanket. Instead of a cozy carb fest, it was a whimsical, abstract interpretation with miniature crispy rice puffs, Madras curry and coconut/banana ice cream. #divine.

My go-to fish (halibut) followed by the inventive “rice” pudding.

During the two-hour meal, I didn’t think once about the arduous journey ahead. After tea, my dinner mate and I were driven through the gardens in a golf cart to the main entrance. Seeing the park at night, with its glowing Avatar-like supertrees and sculptures—including Planet, the sleeping baby by British artist Marc Quinn—was the magical footnote to a perfect evening.

Dateline: Singapore Chanel Cruise Collection

The quick recap in 10 words: Circa 1913 boyish chic with a ’50s colonial cricket-inspired twist.

The inspiration: Karl Lagerfeld said that Coco Chanel—and how she looked when she opened her first boutique in Deauville in 1913—was the main inspiration for this collection. The night before the runway show, Lagerfeld invited guests to the courtyard at the famed Raffles Hotel to screen his short film, Once Upon a Time. The black-and-white 18-minute movie, which reflects his reimagined idea of Coco’s life back then, starred Keira Knightley alongside Chanel model muses like Stella Tennant, Saskia de Brauw and Lindsey Wixson. (Historical note: The Singapore Sling was invented at the hotel in 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in the hotel.)

When in Rome… I tried my first Singapore Sling at the hotel where it was invented.

The palette: Beige, white, ivory, black and navy blue.

 Key silhouettes: High-waisted, wide-legged pants, jumpsuits, long belted knit tunics, short jackets, pencil pleated dresses, graphic black-and-white jogging pants and pleated tops.

The fabrics: Cotton, tweed, latex-gilded lace, knit, crepe de Chine, beaded and lacquered straw.

The shoe: Two-toned pumps with knot-shaped heels, striped pumps, lace-covered stilettos and espadrilles.

Shoe Time!

Embellishments: Camellia flowers, black lacquered ruffles and beads.

 Jewelry: Pearls, chains and sparkles.

The baubles and bangles that stole the show.

Most coveted accessory: The black or clear clutch in the shape of the No. 5 perfume bottle.

The beauty look: Courtesy of Sam McKnight, hair was simple and boyish with most of it pulled into chic French twists. Peter Philips lined the models’ eyes in electric blue and black.

The top models: Karl’s shows for Chanel always attract the top stompers such as Lindsey Wixson, Jamie Bochert, Saskia de Brauw, Aymeline Valade, Stella Tennant, Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, Ming Xi, Shu Pei Qin and Kayley Chabot (who was the only Canadian model to walk the runway in Singapore).

After the show, Karl received a standing O for his efforts. Then it was time for the well-heeled crowd to party. What was that scene like? Read on.

I haven’t read Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians yet, but I feel as if I got a glimpse into the fabulously OTT Asian jet-set scene when I attended Chanel’s recent cruise collection in Singapore. Unlike other fashion spectacles—where the front row is lined with international press and A-list European and American starlets—this outing felt more like a gigantic love letter/trunk show for Karl Lagerfeld’s seriously committed “Chanelites.”

There were some notable style scribes (Carine Roitfeld and André Leon Talley), one American celebrity (Dakota Fanning) and some Asian film stars (Rinko Kikuchi, Fann Wong, Zhou Xun and Gwei Lun-Mei), but the majority of the 1,200 people at the show on May 9 appeared to be A-list shoppers who wore their loyalty literally from head-to-two-toned pumped toe. While some travelled from Hong Kong, Bangkok and Malaysia, many of the moneyed set were from Singapore—a city The Wall Street Journal recently called the “world’s richest city.” According to Global Language Monitor, it also ranks eighth in the world’s fashion capitals.

At the afterparty held at the Loewen Cluster—a collection of buildings that at one time housed a nutmeg factory as well as British army barracks—I sidled up to two Chanel-clad young women or, as Kwan calls them, “CRAs.” After a little banter about the cruise collection’s chic pencil skirts, high-waisted wide-legged pants and the adorable—and highly covetable—No. 5 “fragrance” clutch, I asked them what they did for a living.

Read on to find out just how these two stylish women fund their fashionable—and enviable—wardrobes.

“Pardon?” one asked. “You know, work…what do you do for work?” I clarified. They looked at each other and started to giggle while politely covering their mouths. Then the proverbial golden penny dropped and I realized that, like Dowager Countess, these ladies likely didn’t know what a weekend is.

Clearly amused at my Seinfeld-like Elaine moment, they asked if they could take a picture of me with them. I demurred and then slipped into the crowd and made my way to the area where Karl sat cloistered behind a freshly whitewashed lattice wall. An elegant woman in her early 60s—and dressed in one of Chanel’s new spring tweed suits—was as giddy as a girl at a Justin Bieber concert when she spotted the signature silver ponytail and dark shades. Undeterred by his security team, she made her way to the wall and quickly snapped a shot of the designer. I was going to take one as well, but, unlike Karl’s stylish and stealthy super-fan, I was told there would be no more photos.

I then moved on to the outdoor court area where Señor Coconut and his group were starting to sing “Sweet dreams are made of this.” The tropical, steamy scene was surreal. At times it felt like I had stepped onto a set of a Chanel commercial—especially when Stella Tennant floated by in a diaphanous gown or I’d spot some insouciant stunner sipping champagne while coyly playing with the Chanel pearls around her neck. Other than the runway—or inside one of the label’s famed boutiques—I had never seen so many pieces in the real world (or as real as this world gets!).

As I was leaving the compound, the DJ started to spin a cover of the Isley Brothers’ Who’s That Lady.” I smiled, as I had spent the entire night wondering the very same thing about the women who graced this scene.

Throughout May, I’ve been pushing myself to move harder and harder. I don’t know what it is, but even though I hate cardio, I always feel better after a good session!

With the announcement of Oakley’s new ambassadors for 2013, I am feeling even more inspired to keep up my active lifestyle. The women who have been selected to rep the brand for this year are inspiring and completely motivating! Here are the Ontario winners:

Hold on for dear life, people: the French 75 cocktail packs a punch. This boozy delight was first named after a .75mm handgun–because apparently, that’s how hard this drink will hit you. Of course, with the ELLE Canada team couldn’t resist seeing whether the drink lives up to its name. The verdict? It’s a good thing tomorrow’s Saturday. Ka-pow.

You will need:
1.5 oz of champagne (we used Chandon)
1 oz of Tangueray gin
lemon
0.5 oz simple syrup

The Great Gatsby was praised for its stunning cinematography and carefully crafted costumes during its premiere at the Cannes film festival Wednesday night. But before the show started, Hollywood’s leading ladies took to the red carpet to make their own fashion statements. Carey Mulligan–who stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the film–stepped in front of the cameras at the festival wearing a gorgeous figure-hugging pink gown by Dior. She added to her old Hollywood glam look by slicking back her blonde hair and adding a dark red lip, paying homage to the extravagant costumes designed by Catherine Martin for the film. Nicole Kidman, Cara Delevingne and Julianne Moore also made the trip to see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece come to life on the big screen wearing a variety of spring trends, including florals, lace and pastels. Be sure to buy your tickets to catch a glimpse of the fashion within the film this weekend!

Bad news, boys: the gorgeous Keira Knightly is now a married woman! On Saturday May 4th, Knightley married Klaxons musician James Righton, who put a ring on it in May last year. The couple has been together for over two years, having met through mutual friend Alexa Chung. Knightley and Righton wed in the South of France over the weekend; Knightley wore a pale pink, strapless, knee-length tulle dress paired with a white Chanel jacket and ballet pumps. The soft look was topped with a garland of flowers worn on her loose hair. The wedding was a small event, with only 11 guests attending the town hall ceremony near Marseilles. The ceremony was followed by a larger reception in a garden marquee at Knightley’s mother’s holiday home.  [Vogue UK]

Employees of Virgin Atlantic must be getting pretty excited right about now! Famed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has re-designed the airline’s iconic red uniforms; the new looks will debut in July 2013, and the official launch will be in 2014. Westwood has been working with Richard Branson to create environmentally friendly uniforms – the polyester yarn used in the uniforms comes from recycled plastic bottles, while reused roadside banners make up the canvas. Of her ethical looks, Westwood stated, “Fashion – actually let’s call it clothing, because most of it isn’t fashion – is one of the biggest polluters, it must be with all that landfill. My main focus is quality, rather quantity, and I’ve been saying to people, ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last’, Rather than just keep sucking things up.” [Vogue UK]
